About Us

Dr. Cuong was born in Saigon, Vietnam and moved to the United States in 1986 with his parents and older sister. He settled in Atlanta, Georgia and entered Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) as a Dean Scholar to study Computer Engineering. After completing a 1 year internship with Georgia Tech Research Institute, he changed major to Applied Biological sciences and graduated in the summer of 1996, earning a Bachelor of Science with High Honors. He continued to work in genetic research with associate professors at Georgia Tech until 1997, when Dr. Cuong matriculated at Georgia State University to complete the Bachelor of Science for Medical Technology, earning his Magna Cum Laude. In 1998 he worked at Emory University Hospital as a Chemistry and Microbiology Lab Technician for almost 1 year before entering the School of Medicine at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Completing the four-year Medical Doctor degree (MD) in 2003, Dr. Cuong moved to Richmond, Virginia where his internship at Chippenham/ Johnston-Willis medical center resided, subsequently earning his medical license to practice by completing a Family Medicine Residency at Chesterfield Family Practice, an affiliated residency program with Virginia Commonwealth University and the Medical College of Virginia. His next employment was in Statesville, NC beginning in 2006 where he joined Iredell Healthcare Systems as a hospitalist physician, continuing with NovantHealth Presbyterian and subsequently Carolinas Healthcare Systems over the next 10 years. Dr. Cuong then took over Central Care Clinic in January 2016 to practice Primary care medicine.

Dr. Cuong married his wife, whom he first met at Georgia Tech, in July 2000 while matriculating at the Medical College of Georgia. Both he and his wife completed their residencies in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Bernice Hoanglan Doan currently work full time as a hospitalist physician with Carolinas HealthCare Systems. They have 3 children, a pet dog named Snowy, and a pet bird named Indy Blue.

Besides practicing medicine, Dr. Cuong enjoys playing the piano, competing as a black belt in Taekwondo as well as intramural sports including fencing, volleyball and soccer, and spending time with his children outdoors. He is also active with local programs in the community and serves as President of the Care2Share of the Carolinas charitable foundation based in Charlotte, NC.
